Amy Hooper

Humble, unpretentious, and down-to-earth come to mind when describing Amy.  For someone who has risen to such a plateau in birding, she downplays her expertise and skill.  She is a welcome lungful of fresh air in the often stodgy and self-absorbed world of the professional birder.  In a recent email to the EPBWC she wrote:

“Mr. Devereaux, Thank you very much for placing me in such esteemed company. You will not, however, find a biography of me online... though you will find this interview in Birding, from which a bio might be culled. Any expertise in my possession lies more with editing and magazines than in birding. Many individuals who are better birders than me come to mind, and I’d be happy to name names.”

The current editor (since 2002) of WildBird magazine, she began working as a magazine editor in 1995 and joined the WildBird staff in 1998. Amy Hooper also pens tidbits about birds, birders, and birding in her wide-ranging blog, “WildBird on the Fly” <http://www.wildbirdonthefly.blogspot.com> started in 2005. She travels frequently to see birds and meet birders, and she actively supports a number of organizations that help conserve and preserve birds, including the American Bird Conservancy, the American Birding Association, the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology, and the National Audubon Society. She champions young birders. Hooper enjoys reading, driving her 1972 BMW 2002, yoga, and baking cookies in her apartment in Costa Mesa, California.
